The tread on winter tires delivers much better traction in wintery conditions. Winter tires have larger grooves between the blocks of tread which allow for good stopping and secure handling on dangerous, icy roads.
When driving in snow, tires need to be able to bend and stretch. Snow tires typically have sipes, which are slots that cling to snow for an added grip, providing much safer driving conditions.
This main difference between all-season tires and winter tires is the extra grip, which prevents the car from slipping on snowy or icy roads.Winter tires are engineered to stay gripped when it gets cold.
All-season tires can provide reasonable traction during the winter; however, their performance is about the same as snow tires that are half worn. Half-worn all-season tires can be very dangerous and are unsuitable for winter driving conditions.
Snow tires are not outrageously expensive as most people may think. Generally speaking, snow tires cost about the same price as all season tires. In most cases, your all-season tires will last a lot longer when they’re saved from tough winter conditions.
Typically, snow tires will last through three to four winters, depending on how they are cared for. If you use them all year round, they will wear down faster.
